As an important agricultural production tool, the service life and operational reliability of alfalfa balers largely depend on daily maintenance and upkeep. Scientific and meticulous maintenance can prevent problems before they occur, significantly reducing downtime and making it a highly profitable investment.
Daily maintenance is fundamental. After each operation, no matter how tired you are, take the time to clean the machine. Use a high-pressure air gun or brush to thoroughly remove dust and hay clippings adhering to the machine’s surfaces, especially the knotter, feeder, compressor chamber, and around the sensors. These residues absorb moisture, accelerate corrosion, and may interfere with sensor operation. After cleaning, check that the binding rope/wire is sufficient and inspect for any obvious oil leaks, loose or damaged parts.
Periodic lubrication is like the “blood” of a machine. Strictly follow the lubrication points and cycles specified in the operation manual, using the designated type of grease or machine oil. Pay special attention to the knotter, all bearings, chains, pivot points, and other moving parts. In dusty environments, the lubrication cycle may even need to be shortened. Observe the condition of the squeezed-out old grease. Excessive metal shavings or dirt may indicate internal wear.
Seasonal deep maintenance is crucial. After a busy operating season, a comprehensive overhaul of the machine should be performed. Thoroughly clean the machine; inspect all worn parts, such as piston seals, cutters, and knotter jaws, and replace them if necessary; drain the hydraulic oil from the hydraulic tank, clean the tank, and replace the oil and filter; apply rust-preventive oil to exposed metal surfaces, such as piston rods; park the machine in a dry, well-ventilated shed and support it with stands to reduce tire load. Maintaining a simple maintenance log, recording maintenance times and procedures, will keep maintenance more organized.
